Fort Lauderdale Fishing for Dolphin
Fort Lauderdale fishing offers a year round fishery for Dolphin fish. Also know as mahi-mahi and dorado, dolphin are one of the most exciting fish to catch in the ocean. They are one of the most colorful fish in the ocean as well as one of the most acrobatic fish in the ocean. Off the Ft. Lauderdale coast dolphin can be caught as close as a mile off the beach, though at times we may have to look offshore.
The most peak time of the year for your Fort Lauderdale fishing charter for dolphin would be April through June. This is the time of the year where the fish are moving north along with the warming waters. During this time we tend to see large packs of fish moving to the north and you can predict when they will be here by listening to catch reports coming from the keys, then Miami, and finally off Fort Lauderdale.
Best bet for dolphin would be days with an east wind. Several consecutive days of east wind really increases your chances. On the east wind the fish tend to concentrate closer to the Ft. Lauderdale coast as the wind keeps bait and weed lines stacked up on this side of the Gulf Stream.
When targeting dolphin though they can be caught while live baiting on the reef the best chances for success is to run offshore and look for floating debris to birds following fish. Dolphin tend to orient themselves with floating structure as that provides safety for smaller baitfish that the dolphin feed on. Weedline fish can be targeted trolling lures, lures with ballyhoo, or slow trolling/drifting with live baits. Fish under birds can be caught trolling also though pitching a live bait to a pack, or single, hungry fish is really exciting and visual way of targeting them.
On the Conched Out we deploy a combination of the tactics to get the best results on your Ft. Lauderdale fishing charter.
